"Yeah, I've heard of Nolo, you guys publish those self-help legal books, right?" Right, we hear that a lot from attorneys. However, the 21st Century Nolo helps people in a whole lot more ways than just publishing our popular and well-written plain-English legal guides.
Since 1971, Nolo, derived from the legal term Nolo Contendere from the Latin meaning "I do not wish to content," has been publishing legal information and resources for consumers to help them with their legal issues. Nolo products are now found in almost every bookstore, library & office supply store across the country. We are also mentioned more than 2,500 times per year on average, in the mainstream press and our Nolo authors are regularly called upon for expert legal commentary on current consumer issues.
Today, more than 15 million consumers & small businesses visit Nolo.com each year and our full service legal center provides everything to help them including articles, podcasts, blogs, forms, software, legal dictionaries & encyclopedias and now a directory of consumer-focused attorneys nationwide.
So why did Nolo start working with Attorneys?
Even though all of our books always state that for many legal issues you will need to consult an attorney, we had no where to send people looking for the consul of a good local lawyer. The decision to create the Nolo Lawyer Directory was obvious.
Due to the rapid growth of visitors to our online resource center - a 300% increase just in the past 12 months - and the overwhelming requests from consumers seeking legal consul beyond our website, we responded to that demand and deemed it was high time that we began working with qualified attorneys in specific areas of law across the country and created the Nolo Lawyer Directory. Now with over 2,500 member attorneys in the directory, we continue our search for qualified lawyers to become Nolo member attorneys as our growth in on-line visitors continues to be phenomenal.
What is a qualified attorney?
Glad you asked. For 38 years, people have turned to Nolo to help them with their legal needs. The New York Times says, "In Nolo you can trust," and now we are looking to partner with attorneys that we can trust to handle our consumer's needs. Our extensive interview process that we conduct with each and every attorney helps to ensure that all of our Nolo member attorneys meet certain basic criteria including taking the Nolo pledge.
Highlights of the Nolo member attorney qualifications include:
- Nolo attorneys are client-focused and have room in their practice to take on new client matters
- Nolo member attorneys value an educated client and will respect clients efforts to further educate themselves on their specific legal issue
- Nolo member attorneys have a clean bar record. We run a background check on ALL member attorneys before we bring them aboard
- Nolo attorneys enjoy their work and bring passion and integrity to what they do

Grand comment about search engines. I'm honestly amazed that that hasn't been stated earlier.
Yes, somewhat general. A lot of the attorneys that we talk to still are very unaware of SEO, search in general and even more basic concepts of the Internet. Thanks for the feedback.
I have made it through some of your blog and so far so good. I'm still a little lost on the subject, but plan on saving it to my favorites and coming back. I have found several other sites and am trying to consolidate them all so i can compile a list of resources.
